Ice Skating in Westchester: The Public Rinks, From Playland's Ice Casino to Ebersole

Westchester has more public ice than most people realize, from a three-rink Art Deco hall on the Sound to a city rink with free resident sessions. Here is where to skate this winter and how each one works.

5 min read

Ice skating in Westchester runs on public ice. The county, two cities and a town each have a rink, and between them they cover the Sound Shore, the county seat and the southern border with public sessions through the winter. The holiday weeks from late November through New Year's are the busiest stretch of the season and the reason to know the schedules before showing up with a car full of cousins.

Playland's Ice Casino, Rye

The Ice Casino at Playland in Rye has been the county's main skating hall for more than 80 years. It is a historic Art Deco building with three temperature-controlled indoor rinks, which makes it the weatherproof option and the one with the most ice to go around. The county lists a full schedule of public sessions with extended holiday hours, plus weekday freestyle, adult skate and children's puck-time programs.

During the holiday season the Ice Casino has run Skating with Santa. Discounted rates apply for students, seniors and children under 12, skate rentals and sharpening are on site, and parking is free. It sits off I-95 at exit 19.

Check the posted schedule before going. Session times change through the season, and holiday sessions draw the biggest crowds.

Ebersole Ice Rink, White Plains

The City of White Plains runs Ebersole Ice Rink in Delfino Park at 110 Lake Street, home ice for the White Plains High School Tigers, the Stepinac Crusaders and the White Plains Plainsmen youth program. Public skating as posted on the city's facility page:

  • Monday through Thursday: no public sessions
  • Friday: 2:30 PM to 4 PM (free, White Plains residents only), 5:50 PM to 6:50 PM (half price), 8:15 PM to 10:15 PM
  • Saturday: 1 PM to 3 PM
  • Sunday: 8:30 AM to 10:15 AM (adults only), 1 PM to 3 PM

Admission is $10 for youth, $12 for adults and $7 for seniors, with skate rentals at $6 and sharpening at $12. Ten-visit coupon books bring the per-session price down for regulars. The Friday resident session is the rare free skate in the county, and proof of residency is required.

Hommocks Park Ice Rink, Larchmont

The Hommocks Park Ice Rink at 140 Hommocks Road in Larchmont has served the Town of Mamaroneck since it opened in December 1973. The town owns and runs it through its Recreation Department, and it reopened on September 13, 2025 after a round of structural repairs and energy-efficiency upgrades, with the New York Rangers and Benjamin Moore donating resources for the refurbishment. A Rangers alumnus cut the ribbon.

Hommocks is a community rink first: house hockey, learn-to-skate classes and public sessions share the ice. Public skate hours vary by week, so the town's recreation page is the source to check before driving over from Mamaroneck or the rest of the Sound Shore.

Murray's Skating Center, Yonkers

The City of Yonkers runs Murray's Skating Center at 348 Tuckahoe Road, which switches to roller skating over the summer and returns to the ice in the fall. It is the public rink for the southern end of the county, a short drive from Bronxville and Mount Vernon. The city posts the current public-skate schedule on its own pages, and that is the schedule to trust.

Planning the skate

  • Book or arrive early in holiday weeks. The days between Christmas and New Year's are the busiest of the season at every rink.
  • Check the schedule the same day. Hockey games and private rentals bump public sessions without much notice.
  • Bring proof of residency where it counts. White Plains' free Friday session is residents only.
  • Dress in layers. Indoor rinks are cold, and covered rinks are colder.
  • Know the session type. Adult-only, freestyle and puck-time sessions are not open to every skater. Read the label on the schedule before paying.
  • Plan for the lot. Parking at shoreline and park rinks can be icy and dark by late afternoon in December.

For adults 21+

The rinks are public facilities run by the county, two cities and a town, and New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. Parks, parking lots and the boardwalk at Playland all count. A skating trip is a family errand, and it stays one.

For adults who shop on the same day, licensed stores are close to most of these rinks, including several in White Plains and seven in Yonkers. Verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov, keep purchases sealed in the car, and check the dispensary map for addresses. Holiday markets, tree lightings and the rest of the season's calendar are on the events page.
