Rockefeller State Park Preserve sits at the heart of Westchester's rivertown hiking culture. More than 55 miles of carriage roads wind through meadows and woodlands above the Pocantico, popular with Tarrytown commuters decompressing after a Metro-North ride and Sleepy Hollow residents walking Swan Lake on a Saturday morning. The preserve is stunning. It is also state-owned, which matters for cannabis consumers 21 and over.

The Rule That Governs the Preserve

New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. Rockefeller State Park Preserve is state-owned land. That means no vape pens on the carriage roads, no edibles consumed trailside, no smoking at the visitor center parking lot. The rule is simple and it is enforced.

This does not make the preserve off-limits to cannabis consumers. It means the consumption happens before or after the walk, at a private residence or other private property, never on the trail itself.

The Before-or-After Rhythm

Many Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow consumers have settled into a rhythm. Morning walkers take a low-dose edible at home around sunrise, drive the short distance to the preserve, and the experience settles in gently during the walk. Afternoon walkers flip the pattern, finishing the loop and heading home to unwind.

Start low and go slow with edibles. A 2.5 to 5 milligram dose is plenty for a preserve walk. Dose timing matters more here than potency.

What Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow Retailers Carry

Licensed Westchester dispensaries stock the categories suited to this rhythm: low-dose gummies, microdose beverages, and lower-THC flower for post-walk evenings. Always verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov before buying. The QR code is the single reliable signal that the retailer is operating under an actual state license.
